Description

We need more comprehensive set of tests for instance resource.

This will not only help us release more confidently, but also will allow us to easily refactor the code we currently have in place.

Acceptance Criteria

Create a comprehensive set of tests for the instance resource.
Feel free to break this ticket down into additional tasks if necessary.
