What is label used for in Polar Area/Doughnut/Pie?

Documentation - Polar Area - Dataset properties says this about label:

The label for the dataset which appears in the legend and tooltips.

But in the same docs under Data structure is this written about labels:

These labels appear in the legend and in the tooltips when hovering different arcs

Notice the difference in label and labels.

It seems as it is the latter that applies and I have not noticed any effect from setting the label. Is this just a copy-paste error from the other charts or does it in fact have a function?
