Some solid percentage of Open Source maintainers should be independent of company influence, maybe 20%?

Open Source sustainability, in my definition, is when any smart, motivated person can produce widely adopted Open Source software and get paid fairly without jumping through hoops. This criterion is good and I stand by it, but it is limited.

What do I mean by indy maintainers? Why does this matter?
