Only as an idea: Why not start by creating some pull requests? If he is not responding you can fork it (MIT licenced) and continue development there. With this, you could also proof at the same time that you are honest with this product and a good successor.

The main reason is I want to use the npm package reference in a project I'm working on and don't want to take over npm package versions of this is still actively maintained.
