As a follow-on from the first step, we're now going to start digging into making these components more flexible and composable.

  • Search Slack channel to see if people ask questions for the component. Are there any themes or patterns?
  • Pair with dev: At this point, try and find time to chat with a developer about the component. Discuss how they view the component and if they see opportunities to make this more flexible. For Coachmark, a good resource would be Nandan, and also invite Jeff Longshore to chat as well for background.
  • Briefly check out other design systems for similar components. Component.gallery is useful here. Google’s Material Design and others are also useful.
    • Is there something those are doing that IBM might learn from?
  • Focus on ease of use in this step – how can we make this component more flexible and easier for adopters to use for what they need.
  • Optional, but I find it useful to look at our Figma libraries to see how designers are using our components/patterns.
  • Playback or write up your analysis of the component!
