I have phad set up to run on boot on my pi, and despite the normal shortcut key combos (ctrl z or ctrl c), I cannot seem to exit back to the terminal. Can someone please advise how I can do that? Thank you

If you used the simple installer script then it installed a loop in your .bashrc file that looks something like this:
if [ "\$TERM" == "linux" ] ; then
cd /home/pi/phad
while :
do
./phad 2>/dev/null
sleep 10
done
fi
That code restarts phad any time it terminates for any reason, after a 10 second sleep. So if you hit ctrl+c etc. to kill phad then this loop will simply relaunch it.
Depending on exactly what behavior you are looking for you'll likely want to edit this file and change/delete that loop.
