Labour party can do a lot of this stuff via their own apps but convoluted, not connected, more trouble than it's worth[a]

  • Labour party apps are too complicated - because they are based on individual voters (rather than [areas])
    • More useful: how many volunteers are there, where are they, what are they doing, how many boards out - integrate with committee room sign in form? Allow volunteer to sign out or organiser to update
    • Labour party apps don't do anything to do with volunteers atm, possibly this is where we could be uniquely beneficial

Matt thinks putting phone number in is unnecessary/possible data protection issues. But would still like to use [the GOTV dashboard] as standard sign in system at some point - maybe with password protection?

From CL hack day:

  • on election day we care less about the names/details of volunteers, priority is just how many volunteers and where are they; prior to election day more details and tracking are useful

  • Labour party organise app has some means of volunteer tracking, not very good - can track party members and details, flag as volunteer or not, send mass emails; no means of tracking engagement over time on campaign days

  • on election day the key info to know about your volunteers:

    • door-knocking boards

      • name and phone of person running board
      • their GPS coordinates
      • how many volunteers are with them
      • how many cars do they have
    • apart from GPS the rest of these could just be tracked pretty easily on paper/in a spreadsheet - how far down adding those do we want to go?

    • GPS tracking though is not possible in a service worker (yet - see Expose GeoLocation to workers w3c/ServiceWorker#745 and then WIP: Use Cases w3c/geolocation-sensor#30) so would need to keep web page open, and we don't want to build a phone app

    • also useful to track and get overall number of volunteers in committee room, useful for higher up organiser to get insight (possibly relevant for https://github.com/CampaignLab/gotv-dashboard/issues/30 also) - we already save a phone call between this person and the committee room organiser to find out turnout figures, this is the other main piece of info they normally want to find out

Going to hold off on this for now until https://github.com/CampaignLab/gotv-dashboard/issues/52 is done, need to get more info on what organisers currently do/what they need, how we can actually be helpful vs just a piece of paper/spreadsheet tracking this (and WhatsApp for location tracking when sending volunteers to groups).

From today's hack day, going to minimally track volunteers with:

  • when setting up work space, can create committee rooms, associate polling stations with these (1 to many), give these an address

  • committee rooms will be shown as extra multi-row column in table, with polling stations alongside; table will now be ordered by committee room with polling stations ordered as now within each of these

  • will also be corresponding other column in table, of same size (on the right?); will contain current canvassers and cars associated with each room, anyone with access to dashboard can bump these up and down

  • extension: add ability to filter dashboard down to just show data for one committee room, and have this be persistent, so committee room organisers (and their volunteers?) can focus on just data relevant to them
