Would be great to have the ability to use labels for curation. Specific use-cases that have come up in conversation with newskies:

  • (W)NBA fans would like a notifications tab that surfaces likes/QTs/RTs/replies from followed accounts that are labeled with one or more (W)NBA teams by the Sports Labeler. This would facilitate real-time public conversation during live sporting events in a way that isn't currently possible using lists and/or feeds.
  • The Bluesky equivalent of a "Verified" notifications tab that surfaces likes/QTs/RTs/replies from followed accounts that use custom domain name handles associated with a notable entity (eg political figures, public officials, national media outlets). This would make it easier for users to verify that they're responding to engagement from authentic accounts. The Nancy Pelosi parody account and the AOC personal account offer two concrete examples that underscore the need for such a feature (or the ability for 3rd-party devs to enable such a feature). It's conceivable that the real Nancy Pelosi may join Bluesky at some point in the future. When that happens she will need to use a custom domain name as her handle but notifications from both accounts will end up in the same notifications tab, which will require users that follow both accounts to repeatedly disambiguate the accounts by checking their respective profiles. In the case of AOC, the move to a custom domain name should be straightforward, but it will make the aoc.bsky.social handle available for others to use thereby creating a situation where newskies can be fooled into following an account that could choose to publish content ranging from satire to disinformation.

Enabling features that leverage labels as tools for curation would facilitate community-building and make it easier for users to assess the authenticity and credibility of accounts purporting to be public figures, media outlets, and more.
