I'm encountering this bug intermittently when connecting to my local ganache node with web3 v1.0.0-beta.37 and beta.36.

It was acknowledged as a bug and fixed in v1.0.0-beta.38.

We may want to recommend users avoid these web3 versions in our readme, like we already do for versions beta.38 - beta.45
