In R:

x <- read.delim( "https://hacker-news.firebaseio.com/v0/item/31429290.json?print=pretty", header=FALSE );
typeof( x[[1]][6] );
[1] "character"

In Renjin:

private static final ScriptEngine ENGINE =
    (new ScriptEngineManager()).getEngineByName( "Renjin" );

System.out.println(
  ENGINE.eval(
    "x <- read.delim( 'https://hacker-news.firebaseio.com/v0/item/31429290.json?print=pretty', header=FALSE ); " +
    "typeof( x[[1]][6] );"
  )
);

Expected output: character

Actual output: integer

Any ideas for a work around?
