Ryver: a user's guide

Alexandre Plennevaux edited this page Dec 13, 2018 · 2 revisions

Ryver is BeCode's internal communication tool. It serves as an instant messaging tool (like Whatsapp or Skype), private messaging and collective communication, allowing you to share with small groups or with everyone involved in Becode (the octocats, the deformers and the magic dreamers (aka the staff that makes Becode possible)).

You can use Ryver on all your devices: via the webapp, the iphone application, or Android.

To get started on Ryver

  1. Download Ryver on your favorite devices.
  2. Connect to our community: becode.ryver.com with either a login and password or a link received via email.
  3. Complete your profile: indicate your First Name followed by your Last Name (we are legion, so Little Poney 2001 is not effective (and yet God knows a much we <3 the little ponies) as well as a picture of your face, so that everyone at BeCode can identify you.
  4. Read the following carefully.

Two types of messages: Post vs. Chat

By default, messages are sent as a Chat. But sometimes (even often in fact) the discussion is focused on a well-defined topic. In this case, you can create a Post: either directly or by converting a Chat message into Post, which allows you to have a main text and a comment thread associated with the[Post] (http://support.ryver.com/what-makes-posts-powerful/). Don't hesitate to test it, on occasion.

Two types of places: Forums vs. Teams

There are two ways to have group conversations on Ryver: via "teams" and via "forums".

Difference between Forums and Teams

The forums are accessible to everyone. Teams* are limited to persons invited by the creator of the Team.

Each class (or "promotion") has its own Team: for example bxcentral-promo1, anderlecht-promo1. Most of your messages will probably go to the team in your class.

If you think your message is interesting for the whole Becode community, then post it in one of the forums:

  • "Becode" if it also concerns Becode as an organization (its functioning, an opportunity,...)
  • The day before to share additional information about the morning before
  • Events for all external activities and outings around the code and programming and professional integration (Meetups, conferences, trade fairs, etc.)
  • Miscellaneous & chitchat for everything else
  • From Twitter is a forum that automatically receives as soon as a tweet contains the hashtag #becode. It's useful to know when people talk about us on Twitter.

So: where to publish?

  • if for one person: via private message
  • if for several people: create a Team.
  • for your whole class: in its specific team
  • if for everyone, in one of the available forums, and if in doubt, in the forum Divers & Chitchat.

A few rules

  • As when you communicate by email, respect the netiquette:
    • remains polite and constructive
    • systematically ask yourself the question: "who is going to be interested in this message, and why".
    • Don't just throw away a link: **Explain to us why it's interesting. Your introduction will also help you find it via the search tool.
    • Only contact the people concerned (so choose either an MP or your team and finally, an appropriate forum (if in doubt, put it in "Miscellaneous").
    • Don't send a link without going through it completely!
    • if you have a conflict with someone and the mustard starts to come up, put down your keyboard, take a deep breath, wait ten minutes for the emotion to pass, then go talk to him, calmly, in person. The computer is not the right medium for resolving disputes.

Forums

The number of forums is limited to the minimum necessary: they are accessible to all classes and everyone.

  • Miscellaneous & Chitchat (default): when in doubt, post here
  • Becode: for general interest messages
  • Watch: to share information related to morning watches

Tips & Tricks

  • To quickly switch from a forum to a team to a particular user: CTRL + K
  • Use hashtags (the same as on Facebook, Twitter, ...) to "classify" your publication. For example, in the following message....

Here are tutorials that explain the #css positioning and #jquery selectorshttps://www.alsacreations.com/tuto/liste/2-CSS

... #css and #jquery are hashtags: in Ryver, you can click on them and display a list of messages about these themes (because they have all been tagged with them). Be careful: **hashtags must always be in English.

  • You can usemarkdown to improve the clarity of your messages.
  • If your message is HYPER important AND concerns ALL members of the community, please contact us.
