It's been discussed for long time in Drupal https://www.drupal.org/node/153313 but no cigar so far.

Now that we've got node preview using tempstore #3062 perhaps this can be expanded to also save it earlier in tempstore so people are less likely to lose work if the accidentally close a tab or click a link.

We should try port this https://www.drupal.org/project/autosave to contrib first and see what it would take to make core. It's a d7 project and uses a similar approach to the d8 proposed approach.
