How to support overlay?

I want to use a map with an image overlay. Short of forking the code and adding overlay support to it, can you suggest any easy way to add an overlay?

There doesn't appear to be a id tag on the map container(s) - is there any easy way to get the map object from my own code to link it to an overlay object?
