Hi, @Zheaoli, thank you so much for bringing this up. I really like this proposal and feel it could make our release process more enjoyable and engaging. Here is some comments about this proposal:
Usually, the release manager should initiate the version plan and begin the discussion. The release manager is not selected; it's a self-promoted role, like saying, "Hey, I want to handle this release."
The release manager can incorporate this into the release plan. We can update the release plan template for clarity. Personally, I feel we don't need a vote for this; we can follow the lazy consensus process, as we do with every release plan discussion, which means it automatically passes without an explicit vote. Any PMC member can cast a binding -1 vote for the subtitle or codename if they believe it's unsuitable. Additionally, other community members can cast a non-binding -1 vote to express their opinion about the proposed subtitle.
We can refer to our CoC policy here.
As mentioned before, I believe a lazy consensus process is sufficient. The release process is already complex and requires the efforts of many PMC members to make progress. It would be better if we could avoid adding more burden.
We should include in the template that the release manager must provide a brief explanation of this subtitle.
Hi, all ASF votes require at least three binding votes. There's no need to increase or decrease the number of binding votes. The most important thing is to reach a consensus across our community. |

Dear Apache OpenDAL Community,
I would like to initiate a special vote regarding an enhancement to our release process that aims to showcase our community's cultural diversity while making releases more engaging.
Background:
Release management can be a demanding task. Many open source projects have successfully incorporated cultural references in their releases, adding a personal touch while maintaining professionalism. For example, the runc project has included various cultural references in their release titles:

Context:
This proposal evolved from an initial idea to celebrate Yuru Camp△ Season 4 in v0.51.0. Through community discussions, it has grown into an opportunity to showcase the diversity and personality of the Apache OpenDAL community.
Voting Guidelines:
+1 : approve
+0 : no opinion
-1 : disapprove (please provide reason)
I will send a PR to update the Release Guideline after this proposal has been accepted.
Special thanks to @frostming @yuchanns @Xuanwo @tisonkun for their valuable input during preliminary discussions.
Best regards,
Zheao Li (Manjusaka)
