Make stable-1 branch EOL #252

SUMMARY

The stable-1 branch is pretty old by now, hasn't seen many changes for a long time, and I'm not sure whether anyone actually uses/needs it. I propose to declare it End Of Life soon.

If anyone is aware of users who like to keep it alive longer, please write here ASAP!
