@alexmt recently pointed out the opportunity for some field names to be less verbose, making for cleaner manifests, and I agree. I want to strike a good balance between being clear and being succinct.

The API has changed substantially since this was opened and will change further with #2219. I think we no longer need to track this as its own distinct issue.
