I notice on my Debian Sid (unstable) dev system that libasound is already installed, but there is also another package, libasound2. When I try to install it, apt recommends leaving it uninstalled. You can try to install libasound if you want, but it might complain, and removing libasound2 might break things. It looks like I will need to do some investigation of this issue, see if there's an m4 file for it, and figure out how to fall back to libasound if libasound2 is not present. Might take awhile.
On second thought, see if there is a libasound2-dev package and install that, and see if the works. Let me know if it fixes things, and I can update the INSTALL file.
Have you installed libsound-dev or libasound2-dev? What happened?
I'm still not sure if one can pull out libasound and install libasound2
seamlessy (on Debian Sid).
It looks like Arch Linux (my other system) doesn't provide libasound2.
