So, not to get too far ahead of ourselves... but Acquia Cloud is now running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial) everywhere: https://docs.acquia.com/article/ubuntu-1204-lts-precise-ubuntu-1604-lts-xenial-upgrade-faq (I think there might be the odd service or two that hasn't been upgraded, but AFAICT, all typical sites are now running on 16.04).

So we should probably make the jump from 14.04 to 16.04 in the Drupal VM defaults.
