Look at whether https://github.com/thephpleague/oauth2-google is any use here as a client. It may make auto-refreshes (if the token expiry times get out of sync) a little more flexible and reliable.

I'm not sure how that provider would integrate with the Google API Client Services. Maybe a simple adapter would work?
