Issue Overview

Feature Request: Toggle to hide left dashboard menu.

Current Behavior

One of the benefits of writing on a platform like Medium and in the old WP Editor is the fullscreen mode that hides the left WP menu.

The idea of fullscreen mode is also what makes many standalone writing software options appealing to me (and others?).

Also, personally, I can't envision a scenario where I'd want to hide the right-side options and not hide the left menu.

Possible Solution

We already have a toggle for the right menu that hides all the editor options. Why not just attach the "hide left menu" option to that existing option?

I'd love something like this also. I brought it up before in #2876 but that one was closed unfortunately.

@hedgefield Thanks for pointing out that other ticket. Interesting disussion over there (UI debates are always richer than I initially assume).

  1. Could this be solved with a plugin? I could prototype something in old-school php, but I've never coded anything in React/Gutenberg...
  2. N00b question: Is it appropriate to close this thread at this time?

I think closing makes sense and exploring in a plugin. For now we are focusing on as said in that issue, making this as clutter free by default.

See also work onging in #3330 — I think this could make for a great plugin.

Circling back to note that designs were explored in #9334 and implemented in #9567.
