Protocols are usually a patern of interaction between two or more roles. So, I often like to draw a pair of UML State diagrams collaborating to help me better understand. For example, I was inspired by the Choreography Diagram in an Aries RFC: https://github.com/hyperledger/aries-rfcs/tree/main/features/0454-present-proof-v2.
