Another alternative to cross hatching -- small glyph-like images (in this case with arrows showing wind direction)
GCOOS color and directional arrows

Another interesting example showing 3 sets of data -- this couldn't be for closure areas, but could indicate different degrees of 3 sensor data sets (possibly selected by the user)
