Someone brougth to my attention that a lot of student/thesis films are actually available publicly (mainly on youtube).

I personally thought that most/all of them were kept private, so this is actually really good to know.

This kind of content deserve to be included in this project.

Some example:

Hi, I'm the guy!

Here's a few more tips for hunting these down:

  • You can find a lot of these by simply searching for "student films" or "thesis animations" etc.
  • To be clear, thesis films/animations are generally a graduation project at a visual arts school. Student films are a lot more generic, but the premise is that they're made by students often as a school project or as a contest entry.
  • If you know any animators you might also find some lying around on their old YouTube channels or websites.
  • DOWNLOAD BACKUPS! It's very easy for people to get hacked, false flagged for copyright or even peer pressured into hiding their video. And that is a big shame because some of these deserve so much more recognition.
  • Speaking of recognition, don't go harassing people. For every animator who made it big, there's also another animation student who had to turn to another profession because they couldn't find employment as an animator.
  • It's all in the name! Sometimes videos are cross-posted across websites, with bits and clips cut out. In the event that an original video is missing, try to find copies with credits to be able to learn who worked on the animation.
  • Don't underestimate the production value! You might see sketch-animations made by 1 or 2 people, but you might also find animations made by 20-30 people teams (with different people working on audio, vfx, coloring etc.)

FYI: every single one if the film added to this project will be added to an archive.org collection. (They'll be downloaded using my scripts for the best possible quality: https://github.com/TheFrenchGhosty/TheFrenchGhostys-YouTube-DL-Archivist-Scripts )
