This contributor was most likely translating from English into Portuguese, but they probably didn't understand that the translations are linked only to the main sentence and not to the whole group. This is very likely the result of translating from the homepage's random sentence.
This happened with another user who was translating into Kabyle. When I asked, they confirmed that they were translating from the random sentences on the homepage.
Possible solution
When translating from a language that is not in the profile, we display a warning message. I'm not sure how this message should be worded though...
A longer term solution would be to remove the possibility to translate from the homepage and create a better space for translation activity, so that when people want to translate, they only translate from that space.
