Aligned Translations, Treebanking Part I

May 11, 2016: 17h00-18h15 CEST

Neven Jovanović (University of Zagreb) and Anise D'Orange Ferreira (UNESP Araraquara)

With Petra Šoštarić, Mario Benedik, Dunja Ševerdija (University of Zagreb)

Summary

The common session will introduce the audience to translation alignment, demonstrating the procedure live. We will be aligning sentences from the third book of the Iliad and commenting on the process. We will connect Homer's Greek with a very literal Latin translation, a Latin translation with an English one and a French one, and a literal translation with a freer one (both in Latin). We will briefly discuss positive and negative aspects of translation as a tool for understanding language and text, and mention large-scale analyses of digital parallel corpora, as well as digital modelling of translation.

The students are invited to use the Perseids platform to align sentences on their own and submit them for peer review by the Croatian team.

Session Plan

  • Introduction: what is alignment, why should we care, how do we do it?
  • Demonstration: we do different kinds of aligning and comment on the process.
  • Conclusion: discuss!
  • And you try it out too!
