Adding to my own discussion, I've noticed that sometimes a large brim is useful (particularly at corners) to maintain a flawless first layer, especially on larger prints. If this feature were used in only one place, printing a brim into the restricted region --reserved for the filament cutter to engage the collapsible stopper-- would be a trivial application that would simplify bed adhesion for large models that themselves do not exceed the recommended print volume. |

I brought this up on the Bambu Studio forums, but as far as the likelihood of implementation, I felt it was low. I have seen people recommend OrcaSlicer, and I finally installed it. I'm impressed. They seem so similar, I don't have to learn anything, but the possibilities for improvements just got that much better.
I'll get to the point. The restricted region in Bambu Lab printers is inhibited by the collapsible stopper that engages the filament cutter for AMS multi-filament prints. The collapsible stopper can be collapsed. This is recommended to expand the printable volume to the entire build plate, but only for such situations where the full built plate are is needed. But... the stopper is collapsible. Why not just allow movements that collapse it but disallow movements that would be potentially harmful?
So, the filament cutter engages when the print head is all the way forward (provided that the head is not far enough to the left to collapse the stopper) and then it moves to the left to engage the cutter, and finally it moves to the right to disengage the cutter before moving back to retract and purge filament.
If the print head is already far enough to the left, the stopper is collapsed rather than engaged. If the stopper is collapsed, then the print head may be moved around with little exception. But there is exception. If the print head is not far enough to the left to collapse the stopper when a left move is issued into the reserved region in the corner, it may engage the filament cutter, collide with the print head, or allow the stopper to catch and remove the magnetic face plate.
So, there are some moves that are safe to perform: moving all the way left before entering the reserved region and then moving toward the front to collapse the stopper may allow certain movements that can fill the region with walls and patterns that would otherwise simply be blocked off. I'm sure this would be a challenge for development, but I would love to see a mod/plug-in that enables the free/warned use of this region for printing objects, provided that the user understands the limitations of movements that can be performed in this area (and that it may affect print quality).
All that being said, who thinks this would be useful?
