Unable to sort collection based on ratings_summary

I have written a before plugin for Magento\Catalog\Block\Product\ProductList\Toolbar for set direction DESC when order is ratings_summary but it doesn't seems to work.

I'm also facing same problem with API also can't able to filter product collection with ratings_summary attribute.

Here's what I tried,

if ($subject->getCurrentOrder() == 'ratings_summary' && $subject->getCurrentDirection() =='asc') {
            $collection->setOrder('ratings_summary', 'DESC');
        }
return $collection;
