Whenever I use the button, it actually disconnects me from OctoPrint. I have to reconnect again, in order to move my red-hot printer nozzle away from the extruded plastic (!)

What do you mean disconnects me from OctoPrint, your printer is disconnected or your account is disconnected from the octoprint interface ?

Oops sorry I see how that can be confusing. My account is disconnected from the Raspi.
