Description

The 2024 Wheel Concept is currently a Tweel with a Solid inner rim and a flexible outer shell that will assist with the suspension

Goals/Constraints

The wheel needs to have a radius that is large enough to get over larger rocks while also turning with the torque that the current motors can supply.

October Progress Update:
Early Alternate Concepts:

Printed Wheels:

Observations and Updated Concepts:
Horizontal or Diagonal thin patterns work best on the edges, and fitted wheels provide better grip than directional arrow treads. So far no adhesives have been needed and tolerancing is not an issue, but it would be safer to have some sort of grip in the long run. Having a rounded outer tread is possible with the dotted pattern to prevent layer ripping at the edges, but there are fewer guaranteed points of contact when the wheel is not being compressed strongly.

New Development Notes:
Tread locked by flower petal/ gear design on inner wheel.
All new wheels developed should use repeated dimensions for the max and min diameter on the Tweel, Tread should have a standard dimension for the max thickness, currently 310.

Notes from this design:
Tread is way too thick, tweel effect will be reduced to much.
Minimum thickness is 2mm, so to increase flexibility there simply has to be less dense, stepping of some sort is likely.

Analysis of current wheel designs with suggested material: Variation of 2-4 kg per tire with complex tweel design, up to 10 kg with no cutouts and various radii for tire and hub.
