RenderToolbox4 is being developed and maintained by The RenderToolbox Team. The team includes:

  • David Brainard, RRL Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania
  • Nicolas Cottaris, Scientific Programmer in the Brainard Lab at the University of Pennsylvania
  • Benjamin Heasly, Former Scientific Programmer in the Brainard Lab at the University of Pennsylvania
  • Henryk Blasinski, Stanford graduate student
  • Trisha Lian, Stanford graduate student
  • Brian Wandell, Professor at Stanford

RenderToolbox4 has a predecessor, RenderToolbox3, which was developed by the Penn team. The Stanford folks climbed on board because they found the earlier work useful and cool.

If you make use of RenderToolbox in published research, please cite our methods paper which describes RenderToolbox3:

Heasly BS, Cottaris NP, Lichtman DP, Xiao B, Brainard DH, "RenderToolbox3: MATLAB tools that facilitate physically based stimulus rendering for vision research", J Vis. 2014 Feb 7, 14(2).

RenderToolbox3 also has a predecessor, RenderToolbox2. RenderToolbox2 was developed by Daniel Lichtman, Bei Xiao, and David Brainard. RenderToolbox2 is no longer under development, supported, or easily available. Versions 3 and 4 are rewritten from the ground up, but borrow conceptual ideas from RenderToolbox2 and incorporate lessons learned from the development and use of RenderToolbox2.
