When building machines, it can be hard to find a way to add upgrades while keeping the area tidy. It could be nice to have an upgrade proxy system to facilitate this.
Essentially you'd place the proxy against the machine on an upgrade slot. It must be directly on the machine, therefore blocking you from placing any extra upgrades there.
Then another proxy is placed somewhere in a limited range: say 16 blocks. You'd link the two proxies with a Target Designator. Now you're free to place Power Banks or Extenders against this proxy as if it were the real machine. Your block range limit starts there. So if the machine allows a range of 7 for upgrades, you'd be able to build out 7 extenders from the proxy block.
Essentially this allows you to move the machine addons into a more convenient place, such as under the floor or behind a wall.
