In this article, additive blending multiplies the source color with the source alpha. This is used to create explosion effects.
When rendering with alpha set to 1.0, additive blending is the same as adding the color components.
When alpha is between 0.0 and 1.0, additive blending gives another effect than adding the color components.
Pre-multipled alpha can transition from overlay to additive blending, see #999.
