removing the endpoint from the api call to see if it is working anyway, so that I can use only the api call partial url that will be redirected by the nginx reverse proxy

Marking as invalid, passing BACKEND_SERVER="" is like removing.

Instead, if you want to deploy the application directly on your machine, pass http://localhost
