Hardhat v3 intends to support ESM fully. This will have knock-on effects for Hardhat plugins.
We need a design document outlining:

  • The core issue with the current HH plugin architecture that blocks ESM support
  • The key capabilities that must be retained by plugins to support an easy upgrade path
  • Current weaknesses or issues with the design

The goal is a clear problem statement to allow any member of the team to understand where we currently are and so contribute solutions.
