Code regions can be made with special syntax for each language, for the purposes of code folding.

As far as I can see it's not possible to run a code region. Sort of like it works in Spyder. This would a great future.

This would probably be done by providing a code lens for the region to execute it (versus highlighting the section manually and sending it to the terminal/REPL).
