Should be relatively simply to implement something like this with the current framework, but will require some work to allow multiple colourmaps in the sixel encoder.
Where this would require quite a bit of thought is on the interface front - not sure how we can allow all the parameters of the overlay to be interacted with (e.g. transparency, threshold, min/max scaling)...
