ResumeParserProject

Project Description

This web app takes in resumes from various users in the form of a pdf file. The contents of these resume files are stored and displayed in the form of a chart. The resume files can be filtered through using a search bar that can take one or more key terms.

For an example of how the resume data is stored within a json file, refer to the example that is preset within resumeData.json.

Technologies Used

Python was used to take a resume pdf file and convert it into text using the Python library, PyPDF2. This text was then written and stored in the resumeData.json file. In addition, Python was used to store each resume pdf file in a folder called "Uploads". These files were stored so that they may be viewed by a user when the user clicks on the "View Resume" option.

PHP was made to create all the dynamic web pages used in this application. These pages consist of the resume submission page, the resume display page, and the resume display page after a search term(s) had been entered. The resume data stored in the resumeData.json file is able to be accessed via PHP to allow for the display of all and specific resume data. The search.php file in particular is what takes care of filtering resumes by keywords as well as displaying the resumes after they are filtered. The search.php file essentially takes the search terms that a user enters and stores them as an array. The program loops through all the resumes it has stored within resumeData.json and finds out which resumes include all of the keywords in the array as opposed to just some of the keywords. These are the resumes that are then displayed on the webpage.

Also note that the "Name" display on the resume display page is programmed to show the first two words of each resume since the first two words of a resume tend to be a person's full name. Because this method will not work for all resumes, please do not be alarmed if the value under "Name" is not the actual name of the applicant.

Bootstrap was used to style the PHP/HTML pages.

This application was run on localhost server which was launched using the XAMPP application.

Here's a link to a quick demo of this app in action. In this demo, notice that docx files are rejected since this app only accepts PDF files. Also notice that multiple search terms can be used at once given that a comma is placed between the various search terms.
