AWS does not currently provide Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) data for its regions. A blog post states a range of 1.07-1.15 https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/industries/four-trends-driving-global-utility-digitization/

We would like AWS to provide complete data listed by cloud region on an annual basis, to align with complete data currently provided by Azure, and partial data provided by GCP.

Adrian met with Chris Walker - Director of Sustainability at AWS on March 12th. He took over from Chris Wellise in 2023 and is working to get more information available, and they are continuing to work on getting scope 3 measurements that they can release data for.

AWS released data for 2022 and 2023 for some of its regions in December 2024. The new data and methodology are described here: https://sustainability.aboutamazon.com/products-services/aws-cloud

"In 2023, AWS data centers had a global PUE of 1.15, and our best performing site was in Europe with a PUE of 1.04. In the Americas, our best performing site has a PUE of 1.05, and in Asia Pacific it is 1.08. These ratings are below the IDC estimated PUE of 1.84 in 2023 for on-premises data centers."

"The following data includes average PUE ratings between January 1 and December 31 of each year. Data is not available (—) where AWS operated data centers less than 12 months.

AWS Geo PUE & AWS Region PUE

"While year-over-year reported PUE has improved or remained stable in the vast majority of our Regions, a
few Regions saw slightly higher PUE values in 2023. The primary reasons for this include different weather
patterns that require different amounts of cooling, and the launch of new, not-yet fully loaded data centers
within a Region. These result in higher average PUEs for the specific Region while data center utilization
increases."

Geography | PUE 2022 | PUE 2023
Global | 1.15 | 1.15
AMER | 1.15 | 1.14
EMEA | 1.12 | 1.12
APAC | 1.27 | 1.28

Their best site was 1.04 but their best region is 1.08. They only provide data for regions that were operated by AWS for the entire year, and several regions are not reported at all. This is similar to Google, where regions hosted in datacenters that are not owned by AWS do not report PUE.

New data has been added to the google sheet for review and will be uploaded to the dev branch.
