Big task here also! Mirroring GlacioHack/geoutils#383.

Looks like the accessor name dem is available! 😄
See discussions started in: pydata/xarray#8040, corteva/rioxarray#687 and makepath/xarray-spatial#790.

Important to coordinate with xarray-spatial to avoid too much redundancy.
