when building with this command "bin/spack external find" it says "==> Error: cannot load package 'kokkos' from the 'octotiger-spack' repository: call() takes 1 positional argument but 2 were given" however the kokkos package is installed and sourced! but I don't know how to inform this to spack

Which Spack version/commit are you using? I'll try to reproduce the issue later but it would be handy if we're using the same Spack commit for this.
Generally, it might be that something in the repo's customized Kokkos package does not work with newer Spack versions and I simply have not encountered it myself yet.
