This file describes the necessary data to re-generate the dataset, along with inventories of meteorological files necessary.
Note that filenames like './' refer to the root folder containing LICENSE.markdown.
Transmission data must be extracted from the published data files which, as of 2017-09-28 are located at:
This file can be opened, and the necessary data extracted, using the freely available PowerWorld Viewer program, accesible at the above website.
Three files must be extracted, and located in './Scripts/Network_latlon':
- buses.csv
- lines.csv
- bus_countries.csv
These files contains the following:
Tab-separated list of bus numbers, positions, busnames and nominal voltages. Example first lines:

I.e. bus number 1 is located at the indicated long- and latitude coordinate, was given the ID P-1 and has a nominal voltage of 380 kV.
The Longitude
and Latitude
fields are populated by the 'display coordinates,' which are used internally by the PowerWorld program; they are not the true latitudes and longitudes of the buses.
To populate these fields, use the included function described in the PowerWorld manual:

Generator data files are downloaded as country/fuel type packages, located in
'./Data/Generator_Data/GEO_PP_[Type]_[Country]_2000-2009.kml'
E.g. 'GEO_PP_Oil_Serbia_2000-2009.kml' contains information on Oil-fired plants in Serbia.
Entso-e load files are downloaded as country packages from
https://www.entsoe.eu/data/data-portal/country-packages/Pages/default.aspx
These should be placed as
./Data/ENTSOE-load/excel_files/XXX_YYYY.xls
where XXX
is a three-letter country code (ISO Alpha-3), e.g. AUT_2012.xls
contains data from Austria for 2012.
For the grid defined by ./Data/Metadata/lats_ECMWF.npy
and Data/Metadata/lons_ECMWF.npy
, a file containing the population density inside each grid cell, located as ./Data/Metadata/popdens_ECMWF.npy
is needed.
To generate this population density grid, we here use the population density information available at http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/gpw
The required data is:
The raster data are at 2.5 arc-minutes resolution. This archive contains the
following grid(s):
p10ag population counts in 2010, adjusted to match UN totals
The data are stored in geographic coordinates of decimal degrees based on the
World Geodetic System spheroid of 1984 (WGS84).
Using any GIS software, this data can be resampled to the grid of the ECMWF meteorological data (lons X lats: -12:0.125:41 X 33:0.125:72), and subsequently converted to a numpy array.
Forecasts given at YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM are placed in './Data/ECMWF-data/YYYYMMDDHH/', where the necessary files are called ctr_PXXX_LSFC for the following fields:
