It seems the referer header isn't set when the icon is put on an HTTPS website. The only way to remedy this afaik is to make served.by-a accessible via HTTPS.

Means we'd have to buy an SSL cert and do some fiddling with the hosting, I will look into it and post costs here for us to think about

With my hosting company:

SSL certificate is $49 per year. SSL certificates require a Dedicated IP address ($30/year).

Can use 3rd party SSL certs (for my reference https://my.hostmonster.com/cgi/help/204)
