Transparent background and smooth font don't work nicely for me.

I have the following code:

running on a LilyGo T-Display-S3. Essentially what I want to do is display a static background image and draw some smooth text on that with the text having transparent background, however that doesn't seem to work at all. All I get is a black text with some dark green background instead.

I also tried with the following callback:

uint16_t pixelColor(uint16_t x, uint16_t y) { return tft.readPixel(x, y); }

but that didn't help either. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?
