This PR

  • Introduces RETURNDATASIZE and RETURNDATACOPY (also copies revert data if reverted)
  • Fixes a bug in CALL in witgen
  • Changes the public context to return slices when calling public functions. This was partly done because templated functions would always be inlined and I wanted to avoid that blowup

Note that the rethrowing hack is still present in the simulator, so the rethrowing branch in the public context is still not used. I will make this change once @sirasistant finishes the string encoding changes.

In a later PR we can remove the returndata from CALL.

Part of #9061.

This change is unexpected, but @IlyasRidhuan told me he has been seeing it as well. It might be some out of bounds hashing, we'll take a look.

This was wrong, we were always returning the whole returndata but we didn't realize because that's what the public context was doing.

Technically it is correct to say public code is "unconstrained" (meaning it is brillig), but we try to avoid the confusion to the user since the AVM is going to constrain it.

Would it be possible to use unsafe blocks in the oracles to avoid the abstraction leak?

I tried but I can't return a slice to a constrained function :(

LGTM! Only comments I have are that we probably should have CPP tests for the new instructions, and there are lots of TODOs not tied to issues. I'm still okay with merging this despite those comments, but it would be great if we could tie TODOs to issues, even if they're epics or tracking tickets.
