Benchmark results

Metrics with a significant change:

  • proof_construction_time_sha256_30_ms (16): 1,786 (+23%)
  • avm_simulation_time_ms (Token:transfer_public): 31.8 (-51%)
  • avm_simulation_time_ms (FPC:pay_refund): 154 (+36%)
  • protocol_circuit_witness_generation_time_in_ms (private-kernel-tail-to-public): 8,074 (+17%)
Detailed results

All benchmarks are run on txs on the Benchmarking contract on the repository. Each tx consists of a batch call to create_note and increment_balance, which guarantees that each tx has a private call, a nested private call, a public call, and a nested public call, as well as an emitted private note, an unencrypted log, and public storage read and write.

This benchmark source data is available in JSON format on S3 here.

Question: what's the purpose of the span attributes? Is it meant to be used as an identifier, or just as a dimension for categorization? Asking because some platforms dislike having attributes with too high a cardinality, not sure about Jaeger here.

That's a good point, but I think in this case the tx hash is our request id from distributed system. I'll remove the other ones (block size, pending txs, etc, but keep circuit name)

Oh, it captures typos 'private-kernel-empt' as CircuitName fails to compile (missing y at the end)

Should we also log the artifact classId if we intend to group by function?

Other getTracer calls don't include the package name. Why do we include it here?

I've not been too strict with the tracer names on this PR. In the spec we said we'd use class names. I'll update this to PublicProcessor.

Shouldn't the span be started when the callback function is invoked by the callee, rather than immediately?

Potentially, but this also accounts for the delay in scheduling the function to be called by the orchestrator. I'll give it a try.

I've added two events to this span: immediately before the callback is called and right after it finishes. One interesting instance where there was a 300ms delay between scheduling the proving request and actually running (span start time 26ms, callback start event 322ms - this shows the even loop was busy wither other work)
