Data: Exports Nationwide totals #948
Comments
The problem here is that we couldn't find the national data for top 25 HS6 codes on census.gov (at least, in the same form as the state data). It might be available here, but I haven't had a chance to dig into these spreadsheets yet: https://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/statistics/country/index.html |
I haven't seen national data that is aligned to the HS6 codes - I'll look around. Last night I did see national data not aligned to the HS6 codes but attached to commodities. In the Exec Sum, I just summed the commodities from the states. Since it only includes the top 25 commodities per a state, it's not exactly accurate but it's close. At the time I thought it was preferable to have one source and one commodity classification system per variable. I'll look at the census data now. |
Census does have US Exports by "End-Use Code", but that seems like yet another thing (not NAICS, not HS6). |
https://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/Press-Release/2013pr/final_revisions/index.html Exhibit 14 using SITC commodity codes, still not HS6 codes |
I think that if we can't resolve this we'll need to hide the nationwide totals for this section. |
Let's hide these totals for now. We have a separate issue for that task in #1053 , and I'm moving resolving the larger issue out of this sprint. |
@coreycaitlin is this the question we had earlier today about whether exports on the national profile were relevant? |
I'm pairing with @coreycaitlin right now, and we're removing exports data from our national profile page because based on this exchange, it looks like we don't actually have true national data for this. /cc @usEITI |
This is spillover from #936
In Explore > Exports the nationwide totals are not accurate. Currently, they are actually the same values as Alabama (first alphabetically), but this could be remedied if we found data for US totals ($) and shares (%) by year.
@Isabelle1512, do you know where we can get Nationwide total $s and % ? I looked in the executive summary and only found values for specific years and specific industries.
